My History is Guam's History

Motheread / Fatheread is based on the conviction that parents and children strengthen their relationships though the sharing of stories and that parents help children become better readers and thinkers by discussing books together. In partnership with other community organizations, the Guam Humanities Council's Motheread program targets underserved communities and helps parents improve their reading and writing skills by discussing values, ethics and beliefs in children's books.

Honors for the Motheread/Fatheread Program include:

International Reading Association in the Promotion of Literacy Selection by Laubach Literacy International as one of 8 exemplary family literacy programs nationally Selection by Barbara Bush Foundation as one of 10 model literacy programs nationally Featured in The Read Aloud Handbook Revised Edition by Jim Trelease

We know:

  • that parents are the best teachers and role models for their children
  • that parents are motivated by their own children's needs and interests
  • that children who are read to at home become better students at school
  • that good reading skills are the building blocks to the family's economic future
  • that strong families make strong communities.
